Typical channel letters have five main components:
- The face (often made of acrylic (or sometimes metal), is the front surface of the letter that can be illuminated or left opaque.
- Return (sides) – These vertical strips of aluminum form the depth or “channel” of each letter.
- Back – an aluminum sheet that encloses the back of the letter and supports the internal components.
- Lighting – LED modules (although neon is sometimes used) are usually installed inside the channel to illuminate the face or create a halo effect.
- Adjustment cap – an edge (usually plastic or metal) that attaches the acrylic face to the returns, creating a finished edge.
