Typical channel letters have five main components:
- The face, often made of acrylic (or sometimes metal), is the front surface of the letter, which can be illuminated or left opaque.
- The returns (sides) are vertical strips of aluminum that form the depth or “channel” of each letter.
- The back is a sheet of aluminum that encloses the back of the letter and supports the internal components.
- Lighting is typically provided by LED modules (though neon is sometimes used) inside the channel to illuminate the face or create a halo effect.
- The trim cap is a lip (usually plastic or metal) that joins the acrylic face to the returns, creating a finished edge.
